The Technology Road Map and Innovation
Technology Roadmapping and Innovation
Technology road maps can be a great resource for innovation. Often they are ‘distilled’ from a large number of experienced and knowledgable contributors coming from a variety of differing perspectives – business from various positions across the value chain, service providers, research and academia, regulators, industry associations and government – all potentially with value added perspectives and insights.
A well formulated roadmap considers at least four perspectives as it identifies drivers and priorities for innovation in the future of an industry or technology:
- major shifts now and likely to impact in the future
- new and emerging customer problems or needs likely to increase markedly or come to light as a result of these shifts
- further development of existing or entirely new capabilities
- the definition of markets where valuable opportunities have or are likely to emerge.
Each thread of evidence contributed through these perspectives can help contribute to understanding about innovation in your industry and markets.
Such insights make a strong contribution, not just to those seeking to prepare or update their own roadmap, but for all people seeking to innovate and create sustainable business value.
